Secret Detox Drink Recipe: Cleanse and Rejuvinate - Dr. Axe

Secret Detox Drink Recipe (A Natural Detox Drink Recipe)

If you are feeling weighed down and sluggish, it may be time for my secret detox drink, which can help cleanse your body and make you feel rejuvenated. For many years, I’ve added detox drinks to my health regime because as toxins leave my body, I feel clear-headed and energized. Plus, recipes like this one don’t require a blender or juicer, so they are simple and easily accessible.

Want to learn how to detox your body? Use this simple beverage recipe that takes only minutes to prepare and includes key ingredients for natural detoxification, including lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, ginger, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. It’s both refreshing and energizing, so give it a try today for the little boost we all need from time to time.

Why Drink the Secret Detox Drink?

Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to avoid the everyday chemicals that threaten your health, especially when they’re hidden in our clothing, furniture, soaps and shampoos. On top of that, we are constantly exposed to environmental pollutants, and dangerous chemicals in our foods like heavy metals, pesticides and preservatives.

In order to avoid toxic overload that will leave you feeling fatigued, moody, bloated and achey, it’s a great idea to use detox drinks to help cleanse and purify your body.

Key Ingredients

My secret detox drink contains some of the best ingredients for detoxification. Apple cider vinegar has shown to improve your metabolism and digestive function, while working to cleanse your liver and lymphatic system.

Lemon juice has an alkaline effect on your body and helps to regulate your pH levels. Drinking lemon water, or adding it to your drinks and juices, can help to boost your energy levels, detoxify your body, keep skin glowing and improve immune function.

Cinnamon, cayenne pepper and ginger contain therapeutic compounds that help to reduce inflammation, aid digestion and boost your metabolism, which is a helpful step toward weight loss. That’s why drinking ginger tea, for example, is so popular. It contains valuable compounds that boost your health and promote detoxification.

An optional ingredient for your detox drink is raw honey. I like to add raw honey to many of my health drinks and detox smoothie recipes because it’s a nutrient-dense natural sweetener. It adds a little sweetness to this drink while nourishing the body with antioxidants.

How to Make the Secret Detox Drink

The first step in making my secret detox drink is to warm 12 to 16 ounces of water.

Now all you have to do is add your ingredients. Start by adding 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your warm water.

Then stir in ½ to 1 teaspoon of ground ginger, ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon and a dash of cayenne pepper.

The last two ingredients are 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of raw, local honey, which is optional, but will add a little sweetness to your drink.

Stir it all together, and your detox drink is ready to enjoy. I like to have it when it’s still warm, but you can drink it at any temperature.

For more intense detoxification, I recommend drinking this detox drink three times daily about 20 minutes before meals for two weeks to flush out toxins. If you are looking for a quick and easy way to cleanse your body and boost your energy, have this drink once a day before breakfast or lunch.

    Dr Axe:
How do I store your – Secret Detox Drink; in the refrigerator, in a cabinet,or on the counter?

    Thank you,

      • Kim Thorsby on

Dr. Axe, I will try paprika I do have a question regarding fabricat does it matter if it’s any specific type of paprika that you would suggest. I know there’s Hungarian paprika and a couple other ones depending on how spicy you like it. What’s your suggestion doctor and thank you.

  2. Melanie E Hoffman on

I love this drink I used to drink something similar years ago. I have rheumatoid arthritis so I omit the cayenne and sub turmeric with black pepper.

    Thank you for posting.

  3. Samia on

You might want to mention that detox can’t properly occur without plenty of complete protein in the diet. Doesn’t have to be meat if some people don’t want that, but cysteine, methionene, glycine and some others (can’t recall) are essential for a successful cleanse, and such supplements are available in capsule form.

  4. Maria on

I have been using this detox drink for several years now. Big Thank You!
Amazing detox. I have a question: after I drink 3 times a day for 2 weeks, I transition to one time a week. For how long is it recommended to drink 1 time a day? Is there a min and max timeframe? My friend in India drinks similar detox all year round every day each morning. Can I drink this detox all year round every morning?

  5. Meghan on

I should mention I only use 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar because it’s very strong for me. We can always adjust it according to our needs and palette preference 🙏💗

  6. Meghan on

This works so well. When I first found the site about eight months ago, I started drinking this every day and it helped so much. I’m going to start again. I could use a natural detox and boost again. Thank you for all you do to help others in our journey.

  7. Schellie Ware on

Is it safe for one dealing with insulin resistance and reactive hypoglycemia?. Looking at the ginger at that I know longterm use lowers.

    • Lily on

Since I started drinking this drink, I am extremely tired. Is it possible that this detoxing drink is making me tired and once I am detox day will feel energized.

  8. Linda on

I used to do this drink all the time. My enamel was depleted from my teeth had I had bone loss in my mouth? How do I rinse or do I drink thru a straw?

  9. Cheryl Green on

Delicious Detox Drink. My first time trying it was yesterday. I love that tasty zing you get from ginger and cayenne. Thank-you for this recipe.

  10. Anika on

    Hi Dr Axe,
I have Lupus and a bunch of other autoimmune diseases, your website is my first go to. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I have been looking at everything I can find regarding colon tumor (cancer)
Is this safe to drink if the cancer maybe spread to the liver?

  11. Helen on

I made this drink 4 days ago and have been having it everyday. I did substitute the powdered ginger for fresh ginger after steeping it for a few minutes This is a wonderful warming drink. Thankyou so much for this recipe.

  12. Linda on

    Love the detox drink!
I am going to do this 3 times a day for 2 weeks to help detox my liver!
Thank you Dr Axe, you are a Blessing to so many!

  13. Edith Williams on

Hi Dr Ace, thank you for you liver cleanse info. Please remind people that ACV can be detrimental to your teeth if not used properly. I was not told to use a straw, and it ruined my front teeth. Please research it to understand what I’m talking about. I have been following your advice for years. Thank you so much.

  14. Christina Haines on

This is the FIRST TIME I have been able to actually try this drink. Every time the article tries to sell me something first. This is actually great and the article was helpful to know why!

  15. Tania Blackwood on

Very useful I have severe arthritis pain in my knees and it prohibit me to walk so doing this in the morning I think it will cleanse my body and heal my joint pain

  16. Julie on

I’m having a 🤦‍♀️ moment. For a few years I drank something similar almost every morning. Life gets in the way sometimes and I was traveling back and forth from Michigan to Florida taking care of my mom. I just never good back into the routine.

I would mix 2 caps full of ACV, ground ginger, cinnamon, cayenne, turmeric , raw honey, and a drop of black pepper essential oil. Never thought about adding lemon juice! I would add about 4 ounces of warm water and drink it down and slam (gently) my glass on the counter like back in my “doing shots” days.

I drink lemon water through out the day with either basil, cucumber, frozen pineapple or papaya, clementine section or lime added. So refreshing.

I’m getting back to my old habit, Pronto ! This could be why I’m feeling sluggish, foggy and bloaty the last year or so!

    Thanks, Dr. Axe!

  17. Marilyn Lindholm on

Glad I found your site. I was using ACV in grape and apple juices…way too much sugar. I love ACV and was looking for an alternative…thanks all.

  18. Gloria on

What about heart medication? I am on a beta blocker and a ace inhibitor, will it affect the blood pressure too much??? Don’t want it to go to low…..

  19. lara on

    Hi Dr Axe

How doe the cinnamon mix it-mine seems to float on the top. Any thought if this is ok if you have SIBO and any good protocols you would follow if you had SIBO

  20. Joyce S. on

Dr. Axe, will Turmeric work O.K. instead of cinnamon? When I ingest even the smallest amt. of cinnamon, my throat starts to close and I get walloped with giant hives. Isn’t there ANYTHING out there that is not in the cinnamon family (like Cassia or other family members) that I can use to help lose weight? None of the “hard”/nut/bark-type spices agree with me, so I rely on Turmeric, Ginger, Garlic, Vanilla, some other herbs and Berries for most of my flavors/spices.

I am so frustrated with how NOTHING diet-wise has worked for me to date…intending to read Sara Gottfried’s book pretty soon and try her “diet” to reset hormones, but am questioning if that is yet another impossible dream like all the exercising and all the REST of the lose-weight ideas I have tried for the last 7-8 years! ARRRRGH!! (Yes, I am post-menopausal.)

  21. Karen on

I am on a restricted carb diet at the moment and was wondering how many carbs per glass with the Stevia sweetener. Thanks!

  22. Sheila on

Dr. Axe, I finished the 28-Day Secret Detox last month. I’m glad I did it and feel great. I still like to take the Secret Detox drink first thing in the morning. I noticed that the recipe in the 28-Day Secret Detox Plan is different from the one you published online. The Plan doesn’t add any cinnamon or Stevia. I just wanted to point it out or maybe somebody else has commented on the recipe differences. I like the Ceylon cinnamon and have added that in but I don’t add the Stevia. I must say by adding the cinnamon, it sure makes getting the drink down a whole lot nicer! Thank you for all that you do!

  23. george walker on

I’m 71 . I have tried lemon water acv before but never really stuck to it. But this time iv been drinking it every day for the last 2n ahalf weeks experimentally speaking I have not taken my high blood pressure medication for 2 weeks and I won’t for at least another 2 weeks. After the 4th week I will tex my bp numbers

  24. mary on

WOW…..Before I even read this post I had made myself a warm lemon, ACV, honey drink for my sore throat this morning. With all the things I’ve always known about ACV….especially the antifungal properties, and that Lemon is very good for detoxifying the LIVER, etc. with all of this….I feel like I got a huge pat on the back.

I’ve been doing the daily probiotic every morning for about 6 months now.

I’ve finally decided to just drop all GRAINS…for me, it is a must. with a week of that I’ve already dropped two pounds.

I’ll now use the ACV/LEMON drink daily. i had no idea it could help with weight loss!

  25. Julie Arnold on

Hi! Dr. Axe, do you think you’ll ever sell a greens formula that’s decaffinated? I like your blog because you refer me to The Food Babe and I got a lot of knowledge from her.. thanks!

  26. Andrea on

Essential oils should not be consumed “mixed in water”. Remember – oil and water do not mix! At 1-2 drops, as Dr Axe suggests, you get a very concentrated dose!

  27. Duran on

    Hi Dr. Josh Axe

Will this shrink uterine fibroids? Do you have other natural remedies for women who suffer with fibroids? I’m now determined to avoid surgery if possible because I want to have children in the near future. My GYN gave me the worst scenario of having surgery.

  28. Jeremiah on

Is it 2 tablespoons of the vinegar and lemon? seems like alot and the drink on the braggs bottle says 2 teaspoons. Anyhow, I did do tablespoons…drinking now, looking to improve overall health, do a light detox and lose about 10-15 lbs. Thanks!

  29. Scott on

How do you get the cinnamon and pepper to mix in? I have tried mixing for 10 minutes but it never seems to really mix into the water. It just puddles at the top of the glass and makes it tough to drink. I have just gone to ACV, lemon juice and honey because it all mixes together smoothly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  30. Dottie Clyatt on

In preparing the “Secret Detox Drink Recipe”, can I use Lemon Essential Oil instead of Lemon Juice. How many drops of Lemon Essential Oil equals one tablespoon? I have read 8 drops. Is that correct? If so, then I would have to add 16 drops of Lemon Oil. Thank you.

  31. Candis on

I don’t have Ceylon cinnamon right now so I used my Saigon cinnamon. Is there going to be a detriment to doing this until I get the ceylon? Also when I blended it, it was very foamy, is that normal. It was quite tasty, so I do want to continue if the cinnamon is ok to use for a week or so before I get the Ceylon.

  32. Alex Brown on

Hey I was just wondering, I am 14 years old and wondering if I could do this or if you have anything recommended that’s I could do to detox drink wise?

  33. Ellen Sibley on

Should the ACV be unfiltered or do you get the same benefit if not ( it is cheaper and easier to find regular ACV)?
Is it OK to keep taking a daily pro-biotic (Align) if I am having two of these drinks a day?

If I replace the stevia with honey, should it be Raw honey?

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

Sprouted chia seeds have been soaked for a time to allow the phytic acid to die off. This unlocks the nutrients in the chia and allows the body to utilize them. I always recommend sprouted seeds if possible

  34. Tricia on

I’ve been drinking this every morning for a week and I’m having extreme acid reflux or indigestion. Could it be the brand of Cinnamon I’m using?

  35. Patricia on

Dr. Axe., i started drinking this at least 2x daily and I notice that my #2 has a very strong odor., like real bad halitosis . Does this means my body is detoxifying? I also notice that i i do not take a shower righ after, i will get a bladder infection. I easily take care of bladder infections by drinking all natural coconut water. Please provide your comments. Thank you :)

  36. Kori on

    Dr Axe,

I have multiple questions. First, I have started Trim Healthy Mama and they state not to use Honey as it raises blood sugar levels and can interfere with glycemic levels? I had already ordered the Wedderspoon you recommended to use occasionally…I do not want to if it will interfere with weight loss, so I have been using it on my daughters acne for an overnight treatment?…Also since I have started the plan they have an E meal that is up to 45 g of healthy carbs, of brown rice, quinoa, ezekial bread, sweet potato, etc…how do you feel about this? I am afraid to put on weight as I have been low carb for quite awhile now. I thought I had read that you preferred to limit the bread to very sparingly? I use most of your products as far as supplements, protein powders, etc, but I am confused at the different point of views. I respect your opinion and do your burst training and i love it and your recipes, but I do want to be doing what is best for me and my health and I also have been extremely bloated and gassy..(sorry tmi) but it is embarrassing and uncomfortable…it is from my body changing the way I eat? maybe to much fiber?I want to loss weight not gain and there is so many conflicting opinions… I’m torn on my health and I desperately need your input. Do you feel switching my fuels as far as fats and carbs can be a great lifestyle plan and possible help me loose this 10 lbs I want to get rid of?
All info you give me is MUCH appreciated and your time as well!

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

I think small amounts of healthy carbohydrates like those listed are fine in moderation. I would make sure you are getting adequate amounts of protein, consuming lots of vegetables and add in burst training 3-5 times each week.

  37. Lynette on

I finally got all ingredients made it as a shot was actually pretty good seeing as how I’ve just been doing the acv by itself…kind of like a treat! Lol my question is I used the real lemon concentrate from grocery store and saw that there are dome additives….should I be using something else? Thx in advance….happy detoxing all…

  38. Todd on

Enjoying this drink. Question on the photo with the ingredients for the detox shows pure organic brand cinnamon. That’s the same bottle I have but it doesn’t show anywhere I can see that it’s Ceylon…? Can you confirm this?

  39. Cecelia on

I’m on my eighth day of this detox. The first few days I had a headache after drinking it (which encouraged me because I knew the detox was working). But the past several days my throat started hurting. I kept drinking, but cut out the pepper to see if that helped. Then I cut the amount of ACV to one tbs. But this morning it hurts to swallow. The pain is in the tonsil area.

And now to my question: Is it possible I am damaging or burning my tonsils with the detox drink?

I must add that your website and the help you give to others is to be admired. I follow your advice in many things and it has only improved my life. So thank you for all that you are doing!

  40. Kathleen on

Which recipe for your secret detox drink is most current? I’ve now seen 3 variations…
Been using one with ginger, cinnamon, cayenne, lemon juice, Apple cider vinegar and water thinking it was the most updated version? But, have purchased 28 day detox and see coconut water version with no ginger or cinnamon. Please advise, want fastest results. Thank you!

  41. kirsty on

Is this OK to drink if I suffer with symptoms of IBS due to stress? Also I have interstitial cystitis, will it cause either of these to flare up?

  42. Krista on

If this has been asked and answered, I apologize. I agree with Tracy, you are so patient with all of the repeated quesitons!
Can you tell me how many drops of cinnamon oil would be used in this? I can’t seem to find a good answer anywhere on how much is too much per day.
    Thank you!

  43. Cathy on

Can you make this drink with very hot water and drink it like a tea, or will the almost boiling water have a negative effect on the drink?

  44. Tracy on

Wow Dr. Josh, you really do have the patience of a saint! I cannot believe how many times you answered the exact same questions and posted the exact same links.
    You’re awesome!

  45. Frances on

I have severe IBS due to Fibro and Lupus, have severe RA as well is this going to aggravate my conditions worse, I developed IBS after my gallbladder was removed. I tend to think about taking this in a small shot drinking then drinking water. Any ideas on the safety if this. I am on disability so is this going to cost me a fortune to use on a regular basis.

  46. Kimberly on

I am allergic to lemon, lime, oranges. Is there something i can use instead in the detox drink. I am also allergic to cayenne and other peppers.

  47. Juliet on

I notice that you made some modifications on your menu,,, is there a reason why you changed the ACV and Lemon juice from 2 TBSP to 1? I wanted to say thank you for this mission you have to share with us all!!! Grateful to know there’s individuals such as yourself who wants to keep us all healthy and aware…

  48. Jean BARFIELD on

How many drops of lemon oil do I use? Can I have it warm? I Just started this morning and I don’t care for it in cold water. It is not bad tastings at all i just like warm drinks.

      • Kimme on

Stir before drinking, aye! I couldn’t get it to dissolve into the water. It was chunks of everything floating on top. So dummy me put it in the microwave just for thirty seconds in hopes it would dissolve. It did just a little then as I’m sipping on it I read that’s a no no! So how in the world does one get it to dissolve? Oh, btw, I have found you all so helpful with a chock full of info. Thanks a bunch!

  49. LT on

I was wondering if this is still effective in males and is it safe for teens of 14 and 16 to consume and is it healthy to consume cayenne pepper in pill from?

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

It should be fine in pill form but could be very potent. Because all the ingredients in this drink are real food, it should be fine for them to consume but I would consult with your physician.

  50. Ray faircloth on

I’m a 56year old male suffering from sarcoidosis of the lungs , not having much luck with predizone, would I benefit from your detox cocktail and would it be ok to drink this while on predizone?

  51. Leigh on

I tried this detox, 2 x/day for 2 days. It gave me diarrhea. Is it supposed to do that? Or just at the beginning because I am detoxing? I eat fairly clean diet, but holiday’s killed me! I did it as a shot.

  52. Mary on

Is it okay to substitute Manuka honey as a sweetener? Thanks!

Oh, Zoe, I dunno but I think someone said not to enjoy it hot because it breakdowns SOMETHING (maybe in the vinegar?).

  53. jasmine on

I have read through all the commentaries & ?. I have dealt with bronchitis/pneumonia for many years that has permanently affected my breathing rhythms only to be treated now for arythmia treated w/. Flecadine to control. Mixed up a batch today ACV, lemon, & cinnamon in spring water per recipe. Mixed in the individual bottles. Shook well & drank . The flavor was similar to wassail . Looking forward to increased health. Do you see any issues for me?

  60. Kacey Z on

I’m wondering if this drink would be effective without the cinnamon as I am allergic to it. Will I still get a benefit from drinking the rest of the ingredients? Thank you.

  61. Tara on

Hello Dr. Axe, Will the success be as effective with diluted ACV with 5% acidity and 100% lemon juice from concentrate? Or should I increase the amounts? Thank you for your help!

  62. Len on

I am a busy single father working full time so I like a quick breakfast beverage to go. I normally do a blended Pu-Erh Tea with GF Butter, MCT oil, 100% Cacao, and Reishi mushroom and don’t actually consume food till lunch-ish. Would consuming this detox drink before my fatty tea interfere with any of the benefits I get with my tea or be a problem if not having a meal till about mid day? I don’t see any conflicts but wanted to get your expert opinion! Thanks so much in advance for your response!!

  63. Miles on

Do you think it’s okay to add a dose of Spirulina to this recipe, or do you recommend that i take it afterwards? Thank you so much for your wonderful advice! I’m going to start on cleansing today.

  64. Melinda Carver on

I tried the detox drink this morning using less water hoping I could get it down quickly without the taste lingering and immediately vomited it back up. Can you think of any reason why this would happen? I’m not sick and afterwards felt fine. Thank you.

  65. Alice on

This is very good advice. I did this for the last two years. A little different recipe but it gave me good health. Thank you Dr. Axe for all your healthy ideas and help. At the present I am doing Coconut oil pulling followed by my lemon, ginger and warm water drink. It helps my gut and my mouth. I am going to start my old recipe again. I think I quit it because of the acid in my mouth. I was worried it would hurt my teeth. But I felt so much better.

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

It depends on the person and what their diet is like. If they are eating lots of probiotic rich foods and drinking coffers and fermented beverages then I would do greens. If they are getting lots of diverse vegetables frequently in their diet but no probiotics, I would consider the greens. It also depends on health concerns as well…Both are great!

  66. Naz on

i have gout and thyroid and currently on medication (Euthyrom 50mg daily), thought this drink will help me reduce weight, please advise if it is recommended given my health conditions.

  67. homayra on

is it okay to do a colon cleanse and this detox at the same time?
are there any affects or do you have any kind of recommendation.
im really trying to loose weight i just had my daughter about 3 months ago and
i want this baby weight off any suggestions.

  68. Joanne on

I found this formula (minus the cinnamon which I will now incorporate) elsewhere on the internet and began drinking it a week or so ago. I just found your site and am amazed at your patience and dedication to getting the correct info out to all who inquire. I’m going to be a regular visitor to this site. I am fortunate to have a great store nearby that carries healthy products and found organic, non gmo, not from concentrate lemon juice which is much easier than squeezing lemons :) and less expensive also. I also found this intense (was only using 1/4 C water) but now I get up in the morning thinking about it first thing and don’t mind the taste at all.
I only have one question – I take Klonapin for anxiety and wondered if this drink could effect that. I resisted medication for years but at a point it became so bad and that was the only solution my doctor gave me – I wish I knew then about natural products to try first and now I’m addicted to this and dread trying to get off it. What is your professional opinion of SAMe? Oops thats two questions…..Thank you for all you offer to those who want to live a healthy and natural lifestyle. At 67 I’m just getting more serious about losing weight, exercise and improving my eating habits (which fortunately were fairly good until now). Thanks for taking the time to read this and for any suggestions you might have for me.

  69. Kimberly on

Can I drink this as a shot. I can’t tolerate it with all the water. Will I get the same effects? I do drink lots of water just can’t tolerate it with this.

  70. Vicky on

This was very good. I’m not a fan of honey at all but got organic raw honey and it’s so much better than the kind that comes in the bear. I can’t stand stevia. I made up 6 more mason jars and stuck them in the refrigerator.

Is it harmful to drink too much of this?

I would also add Cilantro which helps remove mercury from one’s system—especially for those with ‘silver’ mercury filings. I just got a bullet juicer just for this purpose.

I also think home made Sauerkraut with yoghourt whey, kombucha and Kefir + a quality probiotic tossed in as the starter helps detox the body and cleans and feeds the digestive system. Has done amazing things for my whole system to elimination.
    Namaste and care,

Can I consume it 3 x daily before every meal instead of following this:
“3x daily 20 minutes before meals for 2 weeks then consuming it 1x daily before breakfast or lunch.”

Hi Dr. Axe, I have 3 auto immune diseases, Sarcoidosis, Sjogrens and RA. From what I have read, I need something for inflammation. I have taken prednisone off and on for 14 years and I hate the way it changes my personality and also I’m sure this is why I am having so many other health problems, including cataracts, etc.. Would this recipe help with inflammation or is there something else you would recommend? I am currently taking Serrapeptase, but can’t really tell if it is working or not. Its very expensive and I’m not sure I can afford to continue taking it. The ACV does help with sinus drainage, which seems to be very bothersome for me. Thank you so much for your help.

  74. Renee on

You stated to use Braggs ACV can regular ACV be used instead. The stores in my area do not carry the Braggs and we don’t have a health store here.

  75. Donna Collins on

    Dr Axe,
I was reading one of your articles and the emphasis was put on eating fish. Can you recommend something else as I am allergic to fish. Thank you.

  76. jozy on

Quality oils? What does that mean? Can I get those at a local supermarkets? Can I opt out on the cayenne pepper? Can I use any artificial sweeteners?

  77. Judy on

Thank you for your answer on the lemon. As a California girl I do have great access to fresh organic lemons.
I have an additional question which you may have addressed. I am sorry if I missed it. Two tablespoons of honey a day seems like a lot of sugar. I understand the health benefits of this honey but blood sugar elevation is blood sugar elevation. Clearly you do not feel a concern. Could you explain. Thanks Judy

I love to drink ACV with half of squeezed lemon but I have always done so in hot water. I am going to try this recipe but want to know if it is a problem to use hot water?

  79. Judy on

You picture bottled lemon juice. Is that your recommendation? If so why would you recommend that instead of fresh lemon? Also the cinnamon pictured is the same one that I buy at whole foods but you recommend Ceylon how important is that recommendation? Thanks Judy

Hello I just started drinking the Bragg’s ACV, with lemon and honey before each meal, but today I am finding myself that the drink is filling me up and don’t want to eat; is this normal? any suggesstions?

  81. Ella on

This is terrible tasting. I was hoping this would be tolerable for me but it wasn’t. I made it exactly as directed. took a sip with a straw and it was horrible but I wanted to push forward and see if I could come to tolerate it since I had a similar thought when I first tried kale. I hated that too but now use it frequently and it doesn’t bother me anymore. However, after the first sip of this that almost made me gag, I waited about two mins and took another, a bigger sip but not anywhere near a mouthful and it was bad. I still pushed forward and after a few more minutes I took another drink but this time I gagged and almost puked. I ended up accidently spitting it out and then almost puking again. I wish I could drink this or even add something to it so it tastes even half better since I was wanting to see if this would have any benefits for me but I jus cant. Ive never even had medicine make me almost puke.

    • Iris on

I also don’t particularly like the taste. Do what I did as a child – hold my nose and drink it down, then drink 2 ounces water to wash down taste. Hope this helps.

I think this question was asked but I couldn’t find the reply. Can the Apple cider vinegar detox be pre made? Not in a large amount just 1 at a time like the night before.

I just happened to stumble onto this site and I am very happy I did. Please tell me, what is your recommendation regarding sweetners for this detox drink for those of us who are type 2 diabetics?

  84. Maria on

I’ve been adding Cellfood to this concoction and I have noticed changes to my hair, complexion, among other things. I love this and has become a part of my daily routine.

Is this safe to drink while on Methimazole for an overactive thyroid? The meds have slowed my metabolism down and I am experiencing weight gain, so looking for methods to counteract this.

  86. mel on

Can this have an effect on birth control pills? I usually take mine at weird times to avoid being near when I take my vitamins. I’m guessin I should probably wait an extra hour at least before this?

  87. Eliazar Aguilar on

I believe alot of people are confusing this daily detox to the 10 day master cleanse. The ingredient mixture is quite similar, but as you have clearly stated numerous times this is a daily detox drink, to be consumed as a part of a natural healthy diet. Do you ever get tired of answering the same question over and over again? If people would simply read the initial comments posted, then most their questions would be answered.

  88. Nicole on

hi there :)) wondering how far in advance I can make this (can I make a jug and pour a glass each morning) or does it have to be freshly made? :)) thanks heaps:)))

  89. Gabe on

20 minutes before each meal, got it but, should I drink it fast , within minutes or sip slowly? What is the most effective way you suggest?

  90. Betty on

Could the apple cider vinegar be replaced with something else? I’m allergic to it. Or could I just mix the other ingredients together and drink that?

  91. Regina on

I’m allergic to lemon, so can the lemon juice be substituted or can it be left out all together? Would you still benefit from the drink if you don’t use the lemon juice?

  92. Sarah on

Would this be beneficial for someone with IBS. I’ve got a friend whose 10 yr old daughter was recently diagnosed. It’s been recommended to have her do the cleanse and restore for 3 months but I’m not sure if they would be able to afford this. Thank you!

  93. Cat on

Dr. Axe, you’re Awesome!! Im looking forward to transforming my body after my first baby. Question, I’ve been drinking slimfast shakes as a meal replacement, A) is that something I should be consuming and B) if so, would the “20 minutes before meals” rule still apply? Thank you for your time :-)

  94. Kelly on

I have only had this a few times(I drink it unsweetened), but now I am craving it, especially in the morning. Is it safe to drink it more than three times a day? I think it is specifically the vinegar that I am craving, but I wasn’t sure if it was ok to have it more than just before meals.

  95. Anita on

I read a post that said she use cinnamon and lemon essential oils. But not the amounts. What amounts would you recommend as I have them on hand and would like to try using them.

  96. Shannon Miller on

This sounds like the magic combination I have been looking for. Can I find these ingredients at my local grocery or whole foods store?

I have gastritis that is being treated with omeprezole for over a year. I started drinking this detox today and I am finding this is aggravating my gastritis after the second one. Will this eventually get better or is it not recommended for people with gastritis?

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

I would try doing a smaller amount of the ACV and lemon juice, about 1 tsp and see how your body does with it. After time, you can slowly increase the amount you use as your body gets used to the acidity.

  98. Nyjai on

Hi, I wanted to use this recipe in order to loose weight. Will this help me loose a lot of weight and how many pounds will i start loosing per week?

  99. Gillian on

I have been taking ACV with hot water and found it to be effective, so was interested in the comment about hot water affecting how the ACV works. Is this true? Is cold water better than hot?

  100. Trish on

I have atrophic gastritis due to having pernicious anaemia….would this drink cause any problems with that due to the acidity of the lemon juice and ACV??

  101. Natalie on

Dr Axe, I have wanted to try many “whole body” cleanses, such as the 9 day Isagenix or Purium Cleanse. Have you heard of these, and what are your thoughts? Do you have any programs like this? Would your “Secret Detox Drink” be similar? Thanks!

I have had problems with stomach ULCERS.. but I’ve been drinking this detox in the mornings.. I mix the cinnamon in with the HONEY first real good then add the liquids and stir real good. then add about 1/2 cup of water… will this make my ulcers any worse or HELP them…

  103. Maya on

I have a health food store and we recommend this drink to our customers. We replace the Stevia with honey though. Honey is an amazing super food and you will benefit from it if you add it to this drink!

  104. Mary Baker on

I have another question…and probably a dumb one-Do I need to blend this in my blender? Today I just stirred it and the cinnamon didn’t seem to “mix” in very well. THANKS!

  105. [email protected] on

I am in shock!!! I’ve tried ACV on and off for years but have NOT been able to stick with it because no matter how I doctor it up, it is still YUCKY. However, your recipe has made all the difference. It is very good, I’m a fan and will be consuming every day. Thank you SO much!!

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

I would drink it 20 minutes before each meal in addition to eating a clean diet full of organic meats, vegetables and probiotic rich foods. I would cut out all grains and sugar and also do some sort of burst exercise at least 3x each week.

  106. Forward Living on

We grind our own cinnamon using a $14 coffee grinder and cinnamon sticks from the Mexican store. Very cost effective and no “saw dust”.

Would this drink help with H. Pylori? If not could you suggest something natural that would? I’m not a fan of being on 4 antibiotics plus antacids. Looking for alternatives if possible. Thanks!

    • Phebe on

You should look into Mastic Gum for healing and treatment of H. Pylori. As for the antacids: look into DGL and peppermint oil capsules to treat symptoms. These can all be purchased at the Vitamin shoppe and yield amazing results!

  109. Ginette on

Very curious to try this but I’m allergic to citrus and have a very low blood pressure. Will it still be beneficial and edible without the lemon and cayenne?

  110. Kristen on

I personally drink a spicy lemonade every morning and it is such a great way to start the day! I also do the master cleanse about 3-4 times per year which has helped me on so many levels because it allows the digestive system to rest and the body to heal and detox itself while the brain and body gets plenty of glucose. Very powerful and spiritual experience that changes the body’s chemistry for the better. The Complete Master Cleanse book explains it in detail since it has to be done correctly and one has to be prepared for it. Then can also add in things like enzymes, bentonite, psyllium, etc. Definitely need to use fresh squeezed room temp organic lemon juice for the most enzyme content.
2 tbsp fresh organic lemon juice
2 tbsp organic grade B maple syrup
    1/8 tsp cayenne
    1 cup filtered water
My body craves it now :-)
    Much love!

  111. Kathryn on

I make a spinach, coconut milk, banana and flaxseed drink every morning. Would this have the same affect if I add this to my drink?

  112. Jonathan on

I honestly take Buffered C every morning and evening as a maintenance. I also use it as a “FLUSH” every so often. Perque makes the purest.

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

You can! The health benefits are not identical but there are still benefits. It may be hard to mix in with the drink as oil and water does not mix easily but definitely give it a try!

  113. Kim Duane on

My stomach doesn’t tolerate acid very well. I get a horribly painful stomach ache. Any suggestions for how to consume these detox drinks without the terrible side effect.

    As a side note, I don’t have a gallbladder.

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

I don’t recommend consuming that brand of oils internally. There are only a few companies that after much studying and research, I would feel comfortable doing that with. I would still recommend using the lemon juice over the oil in this situation.

      • Helen Harnage Blount on

I have tried this before and loved it , but it aggravated my hiatle hernia so bad I had to stop taking it…I think it must be the acid in the lemon juice ….what are your thoughts on this…maybe the vinegar …just not sure. thanks for your reply..

      • Dr. Josh Axe on

Definitely could have been the acidity. I would try it again but only use a teaspoon of the ACV and a much smaller amount of lemon juice with it. Slowly let your body get used to the acidity and gradually increase the amount. Glad you enjoyed it!

  114. Wanda on

I suffered with terrible Reflux and H,hernia for 25 years. I have recent took my self off of the meds, after a terrible flare up. I have started bragg ACV and Kefir (sm.amount a day). I’m mixing 1 tablespoon of ACV in about a 1/4 cup of light apple juice with crushed ice 3 times a day. I have been doing this for about 11/2 weeks, and I seem to be doing better. is it ok to use the apple juice instead water?

  115. Tina on

I just made this without sweetener an it was fine. Does the sweetener provide any benefits other than for taste? Is it okay not to add any or does that change the action of the detox?

  116. Charell McGary on

I am trying this but I am not crazy about the grittiness from the cinnamon. I have read that you can use oils. I would like to know what kind of oil to use in place of powder cinnamon and cayenne?

  117. Brittany on

I know you are to drink this 1-3x daily, but for how long (days, weeks, life) (with rest periods/cycles)? I am looking to detox from sugars and heard ACV is a way to go! So how long does this detox take to start seeing a difference?

    • Dr. Josh Axe on

This is something that you can incorporate for a time or as a lifestyle. I personally drink this every day because of the health benefits. It’s hard to say exactly when you will see results. It all depends on how much sugar was in your diet before, how much candida is present, if you have leaky gut, etc. I would start drinking this and take it one week at a time. Watch how your body feels, if symptoms are resolving, etc.

      • Sally on

How does this blend and the detox process affect leaky gut? Conversely how does leaky gut affect the detox process/benefits?

  118. Renee on

What about subbing lemon and cinnamon oils in this? If so how much would you do? I just noticed how much the cinnamon does not want to “mix” in.

  119. shawna on

Confused as recipe says stevia not honey and yet comments talk about honey and other sugar based sweetener. Also is it alright to use normal cinnamon?

  120. Tina on

I have been drinking this for some time now. But I use local honey and “Wholesome Sweethers” Organic Molasses Unsulphered (blackstrap). I use the molasses to give me iron due to being extremely tired in the morning and all through the day. Is this ok? If not then what do you recommend I use? I don’t like nor want to be tired all day long any more. I have a 7 year old I homeschool so I need all the energy I can get. Thank you for your help. By the way, as far as exercising I am exercising just about every day. I am also 197 lbs. I used to weigh 210 lbs. Thank you for what ever help you can give. Have a blessed day and hope to hear back from you soon. :-)

  121. Ruth on

This is very similar to the detox drink that you have with turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon and ginger. Do you happen to have that recipe that I can share with my friends since I’ve been telling them about it. Even my husband takes it. I think it’s a keeper and I’d like my friends to benefit also.

  122. Chelse on

I just tried this and “went” right away… Like almost immediately.. I used raw honey and did not experience any urgency or cramping. I just felt like I needed to go, but not in a hurry. I’m going hi drink it a few times a day on tomorrow.

  123. Lucinda on

I’m curious as to the type of cinnamon you’d recommend using, as the recipe calls for 1 tsp per drink, and I read somewhere that one should have 2to3 drinks per day. I’ve been reading that the cinnamon typically widely available in the U. S. has high levels of coumarin. It is my understanding that coumarin in high levels can cause liver damage. Please specify what type of copinnamon is healthy ipat 3 teaspoons a day on a regular basis. Thank you.
